Perega celebrates significant milestone at Bedfordshire Hospitals
We are proud to have worked on the recently completed main Acute Services and New Ward blocks, part of the £300 million redevelopment programme at Bedfordshire Hospitals. This milestone marks a substantial step forward in modernising and expanding essential healthcare infrastructure.
Appointed in 2014 and originally part of the OBC development, Perega has been a critical partner in this extensive transformation, its work has included the structural and civil engineering design for the new five-storey acute services building, housing state-of-the-art theatres, maternity suite, recovery areas, critical care unit and neonatology unit.
The project provided a welcome challenge for our engineers, who have been able to employ their signature blend of creativity to navigate numerous challenges associated with working within a fully-operational hospital site. This included: minimising disruption from noise, vibration, and construction traffic, as well as resolving unforeseen issues, particularly working around an existing underground service tunnel adjacent to the building’s footprint.
Further ingenious solutions to keep costs and carbon to a minimum were the strategic use of prefabricated concrete columns and stairs which expedited the construction timeline by one week per floor, showcasing our commitment to efficiently delivering robust, low-emission structures. Accounting for the latest phase in this ongoing project, the recently completed acute service block and ward block aim to increase the hospital’s patient capacity and enhance the overall patient experience through modern, purpose-designed spaces which drive improved flow, safety and efficiency.
Ewa Ambrosius, Operations Director at Perega, commented: “Reaching this significant milestone at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our entire team, working hand-in-hand with the Trust, architects and the wider design team as well as the contractor.
Delivering such a complex project on a live hospital site requires meticulous planning, innovative engineering solutions, and seamless collaboration. We are incredibly proud to have played a key role in creating these vital new facilities, which will provide enhanced care and a better environment for patients and staff for decades to come.”
The new facilities are anticipated to open in a phased manner, commencing later this year.
