Environmental Policy

1. Purpose

Perega is committed to conducting its business activities in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. As an award winning independent civil and structural engineering consultancy, we recognise the importance of minimising the environmental impact of our operations and supporting the transition to a low carbon-built environment.

This policy outlines our commitment to environmental protection, continual improvement, compliance with environmental legislation, and the achievement of our sustainability and net zero carbon objectives.

2. Scope

This Environmental Policy applies to all Perega offices and covers all activities undertaken by the organisation, including engineering design, consultancy services, and operational activities.

The policy is supported by the Directors and will be:

  • Communicated to all employees on the Perega Hub;
  • Made available to clients, stakeholders, and the public via the Perega website; and
  • Applied across all areas of the business

Perega operates an Integrated Management System incorporating ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), and ISO 19650-2 (Building Information Modelling and Information Management). Our offices in London, Guildford, Leeds, Southend, and Belfast are accredited to ISO 14001:2015. Our Bristol office is not currently accredited but operates in full compliance with Perega’s Integrated Management System (IMS) policies and procedures. All seven offices are committed to effective environmental management, continual improvement, and the integration of environmental considerations into business operations and project delivery.

3. Our Commitment

Perega is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and supporting sustainable development through the services we provide.

Our services include structural, civil and glass engineering design, building surveying, health and safety consultancy, environmental advice, and expert witness services.

To support our environmental ambitions, Perega has established a Net Zero Carbon Group which proactively drives systematic improvements within our operations and assists clients on environmental matters. The group contributes towards achieving net zero carbon targets by 2050 through innovation, collaboration, and sustainable engineering practices.

As part of this commitment, Perega has developed and implemented an internal carbon calculation Revit tool capable of automatically calculating embodied carbon within the project environment (Whole Life Cycle Assessment Stage 1-5). This enables meaningful comparison of civil and structural schemes and improves our understanding of how design decisions influence carbon reduction outcomes.

Wherever practicable, we are committed to:

  • Pursuing lower-carbon and energy-efficient designs;
  • Specifying materials from sustainable and renewable sources;
  • Promoting the refurbishment and upgrading of existing buildings in preference to demolition and new build;
  • Encouraging the circular economy and re-use project approach;
  • Minimising waste generated through our activities and design;
  • Promoting recycling within our office environments;
  • Supporting sustainable travel choices for employees and business operations; and
  • Using renewable energy sources within our offices.

We are committed to complying with all applicable environmental legislation and other relevant obligations. To support this commitment, we provide appropriate environmental awareness and training to employees to ensure environmentally responsible practices are integrated into both our project delivery and workplace operations.

4. Environmental Objectives

Perega is committed to establishing, monitoring, and reviewing environmental objectives and targets that support continual improvement in environmental performance.

Our objectives include:

  • Reducing operational and embodied carbon emissions;
  • Supporting the achievement of net zero carbon by 2050;
  • Improving resource efficiency and reducing waste;
  • Increasing the use of sustainable materials and renewable energy sources;
  • Enhancing environmental awareness and competence across the organisation;
  • Promoting sustainable design principles in all appropriate projects; and
  • Continually improving our Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001:2015.

Progress against objectives is monitored through audits, management reviews, project reviews, client feedback and performance monitoring activities.

5. Responsibilities

The Directors are responsible for providing leadership, resources and strategic direction to support the effective operation and continual improvement of the Management System.

The Director responsible for the Management System has overall accountability for ensuring this Policy is implemented, maintained and reviewed regularly to ensure its continuing suitability and alignment with the objectives and strategic direction of the business.

The Net Zero Carbon Group, the Head of IMS, and the Director responsible for Perega’s management system are responsible for:

  • Monitoring environmental performance and compliance;
  • Supporting the implementation of environmental initiatives and improvements; and
  • Ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into strategic business decisions.

All employees, contractors, and suppliers are expected to:

  • Comply with this policy and associated environmental procedures;
  • Work in an environmentally responsible manner;
  • Support Perega’s environmental objectives; and
  • Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts within their areas of work.

6. Review and Communication

This Environmental Policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner where necessary, to ensure its continued suitability, effectiveness, and alignment with legal requirements, organisational objectives, and industry best practice. The Director responsible for Environmental Management has overall accountability for ensuring this policy is updated and complied with.

The policy is supported by the Board of Directors and will be communicated to all employees through the Perega Hub. It will also be made available to clients, stakeholders, suppliers, and members of the public via the Perega website.

Any updates or revisions to the policy will be communicated internally and externally as appropriate to ensure continued awareness and understanding of Perega’s environmental commitments and responsibilities.
