Our experience covers a broad range of healthcare environments, including primary care, acute hospitals, mental health facilities and community diagnostic centres, as well as assisted living, dementia and extra-care. We have supported projects ranging from new-build facilities and major redevelopment programmes to extensions, alterations, refurbishments, surveys and improvements to external works, drainage and roadways.

Over the past 20 years, we have been involved in healthcare projects with a combined value in excess of £1 billion. We have extensive knowledge of working with a variety of structural frame materials including masonry, steel and concrete, as well as SIPs, modular and CLT systems.

Acute Healthcare

We have supported major acute hospital developments as well as smaller, complex projects within existing hospitals. Our experience includes new maternity and emergency departments, ward and operating theatre extensions, imaging suite alterations, critical care refurbishments and site wide infrastructure and fire safety upgrades.

Our acute healthcare experience includes significant redevelopment of some of the UK’s major hospitals. Examples include Lister Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Croydon University Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and Luton & Dunstable Hospital where we worked on the £220m site-wide redevelopment and subsequent emergency department works.

Mental Health

Our experience includes new-build and refurbishment projects for mental health and specialist care facilities, including inpatient and outpatient environments and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

Our mental health experience includes new-build facilities, refurbishment and redevelopment projects across a range of specialist settings. Projects include the award-winning Kingfisher Court in Radlett, Forest House in Kinglsey Green and Princess Marina Hospital in Northampton. Another notable project is Blossom Court at St Ann’s Hospital, where we provided civil and structural engineering services for the £22m development of a new 74-bed mental health residential facility comprising three acute mental health wards and an eating disorder unit. The scheme also included wider site infrastructure works, such as improvements to pedestrian access, roads and drainage.

Community Diagnostic Centres

Community diagnostic centres (CDCs) are an important part of the NHS’s drive to increase diagnostic capacity and provide patients with more convenient access to tests and scans outside traditional acute hospital settings. The national programme was developed to help address diagnostic backlogs and reduce pressure on hospitals, with CDCs providing a range of services such as CT, MRI, ultrasound and other diagnostic tests closer to local communities.

Perega has significant experience supporting the delivery of CDCs across the country, providing civil and structural engineering services for new-build centres, refurbishment and remodelling projects. Our input has incorporated feasibility studies in the early design stages and supporting infrastructure works enabling site development. Our experience includes projects at Mile End Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, James Paget University Hospital and Milton Keynes University Hospital, covering both new and existing healthcare environments.

Primary Care

Our primary care experience includes new-build health centres, redevelopment and refurbishment projects, often incorporating flexible spaces that can adapt to changing healthcare needs. New build projects have included:  Valkyrie Road Primary Care Centre in Westcliffe-on-Sea, where the design had to be carefully considered against a challenging budget, while allowing for future changes to internal layouts; and Kensington Neighbourhood Health Centre in Liverpool, where the building was designed to allow for future modifications more efficiently.

We have also supported complex redevelopment projects, including Hornsey Central Neighbourhood Health Centre, where the original hospital building was refurbished and incorporated into the new development alongside the protection of a Grade ll Listed war memorial.

Working in Live Healthcare Environments

A significant proportion of our healthcare work takes place within existing hospitals and other operational healthcare environments.

We understand the importance of maintaining services throughout construction and the need to work around the operational constraints of healthcare facilities. Our experience of working in these settings enables us to consider the practical implications of construction alongside the engineering requirements, carefully managing access, circulation, noise and vibration and phasing investigation and construction activity around the needs of patients, staff and visitors. Perega is a consultant on the QTS, LCP and LPP frameworks.

Under the P21, P21+ and P22 frameworks, we have delivered services on more than £500m of construction work as a Principal Supply Chain Member registered with the Department of Health.

Our portfolio of projects procured through the LIFT PPP model ranges from a £3.5m local primary care centre to the award-winning £28m Finchley Memorial Hospital.
