Perega continues to solidify its reputation in high-end retail with Moncler

Perega continues to support the luxury retail boom on New Bond Street, with Moncler’s latest flagship store adding to the high-profile shopping destination. Spanning five floors of a historic building that has undergone multiple renovations, the meticulously designed interiors blend heritage architecture with the brand’s signature chic and contemporary style. Bringing this vision to life required our expertise to accommodate new layouts, increased loads and striking architectural features, while safeguarding structural integrity.

Commencing work in May 2023, the team immediately faced the challenge of insufficient information relating to the structure and its alterations since its original Victorian construction. This led to Perega’s engineers conducting targeted opening-up works and assessments, mapping out the existing structure’s capacity.

Reinforcement works were essential, as the redesign introduced marble-clad walls, floors and ceilings, substantially increasing the structural load. The team’s approach prioritised retrofit over replacement, strategically reinforcing existing beams and floors to minimise material use.

The extension of an existing staircase to the second floor, previously an office space, posed a significant challenge. Works involved reopening a previously infilled stair void and collaborating closely with the millworker, Arredoquattro (a high-end furniture designer) to integrate the new staircase seamlessly while ensuring structural stability.

Another major intervention involved the installation of a new lift, requiring complex coordination to find a location that wouldn’t disturb the existing façade, party wall footings, and a crucial transfer beam. Perega devised a solution that included precise underpinning and drainage diversions to maintain the structural integrity of the surrounding elements. This involved rerouting drainage systems around the lift pit and ensuring that the excavation did not compromise the existing foundations.

Throughout, our in-house Party Wall Surveyors liaised closely with 15 adjoining tenants and landlords, successfully negotiating multiple awards with adjoining owner’s party wall surveyors. Detailed schedules of condition were also prepared and agreed upon with each adjoining landlord and tenant.

Party wall negotiations can often be protracted and have many consultants involved in the chain. With Perega able to offer both party wall and structural engineering services, we were able to streamline the client-side submissions, saving time in the discussions with the adjoining owners.

Luke Gardner, one of our Senior Structural Engineers who worked on the project, says:

“This project exemplifies how innovative structural solutions can support bold architectural visions. Working closely with Hyphen Architects and various specialist consultants, we went with a retrofit first approach to balance the constraints of the existing structure with Moncler’s high-end design requirements. Given the unknowns of the original building, the work was a testament to our experience in high-end retail in heritage buildings, including recent projects for Gucci and Jacquemus on New Bond Street. The result is a stunning, structurally sound retail space that reflects Moncler’s signature sophistication.”
