Thomasons paves the way

Thomasons has recently worked on a project which has been shortlisted for the Construction Excellence SECBE Awards: The Meadows, a private housing development of executive homes in South Essex.

The Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards focus attention on some of the most important issues for the sector. They identify the very best companies, collaborations and projects – sharing best practice and inspiring others to adopt new and better ways of working that deliver outstanding results.

The project, entered by CalfordSeaden and undertaken by developer Genus Domus, has been recognised in the Building Project of the Year under £10 million category, which acknowledges ingenuity and creativity in construction on a stringent budget.

Brought onto the build by contractor Kind and Co, Thomasons provided civil engineering consultancy for the site’s permeable road pavements, offering a solution to lack of public surface water sewers in the locality.

The practice was asked to provide a drainage strategy for the roads and the design of the pavements on the access road and driveways. This included preparing the engineering working drawings, levels and setting out information.

Significantly, the use of permeable pavements ensured that surface water naturally infiltrated into the subsoil, and that the development would comply with the planning conditions set by the Local Authority.

Commenting on the announcement, Steve McSorley, director at Thomasons says, “Surface water management is a critical issue for many housing developments across the UK. If not addressed during the early stages of the build design, it can become a significant problem later on.  This shortlisting, by association, recognises the skill and creativity of our civil engineering team. I will keep my fingers crossed for CalfordSeaden and hope they triumph at the awards.”
