Thomasons Director shares engineering expertise in Singapore
Nick Russell, Director at Thomasons in Guildford, was recently invited by the National University of Singapore and Nanyang University to deliver a full day’s series of lectures on structural engineering.
The invitation followed Nick’s visit to Singapore in 2014, a trip made in his capacity as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Addressing an audience of more than 80 engineering students, local consulting engineers and government officers, Nick drew on 37 years’ experience of structural engineering to discuss topics including why buildings collapse and how failures are investigated, the risks inherent in less usual buildings, such as high-rise structures, and the issues involved in addressing professional indemnity insurance claims.
Nick commented: “It was very rewarding to discuss these issues and share views with experienced engineers, as well as students who are starting out on their careers. Nobody left during the session – so I think it went down well! I believe it is very important to share knowledge and encourage the next generation of engineers, both in the UK and overseas.”
Nick has donated the fee for his lectures in Singapore to Thomasons’ nominated charity, Cancer Research UK, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
