Steve Brock retires after nearly 50 years in engineering

Steve Brock, one of our longest-serving directors, will be retiring as a Director on 28th March 2024 after over 20 years with Perega.

His retirement concludes an illustrious career in civil and structural engineering spanning almost five decades, starting as a civil engineer technician at Campions in 1975. Fresh out of secondary school, these early years saw the young Steve working on the design of roads and drainage systems, giving him the essential foundations for future success.

Fast-forward to 1986. Armed with a first-class honours degree in Civil Engineering, he quickly developed a passion for glass structures, having worked on a number of façade and glazing projects over the preceding decade.

Mentored by the late, great Alf Campion, one of the country’s most respected Structural Engineers, Steve’s career went from strength to strength, achieving Chartered Civil Engineer Status in 2003.

In 2003, having spent his entire professional life to date with Campions, Steve took a big leap, restructuring the firm alongside Thomasons Ltd (now Perega) to create the jointly-owned Clear Structures Ltd.

Fast becoming recognised as one of the UK’s leading glass engineering firms, business flourished under Steve’s active and dynamic leadership. Based in Southend, the company worked on an impressive portfolio of projects, including collaborations on everything from modern landmarks, such as The Gherkin and The Shard, to historic national treasures including The Royal Albert Hall and British Museum.

Throughout the lifetime of the firm which, alongside parent company Thomasons Ltd, rebranded to Perega in 2019, Steve has remained at the heart of operations. Not only that, his dedication to nurturing new talent has seen him take an active role in training and development, supporting Perega’s apprenticeship programme.

Looking back on a rich and varied career, Steve says, “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had throughout my career. While I may be stepping back from my role as Director, I’m excited to continue contributing to the industry in a consultancy capacity, particularly in the realm of glass and facades.”

Our Managing Director, Fraser Robb, speaks for us all when he says, “Steve has been an integral part of Perega and whilst we’re all sad to see him go, we also wish him the very best as he embarks upon the next chapter. Whilst he retires from his formal duties, no doubt the Southend office will still be seeing a great deal of him as he continues to provide expert consultancy to our glass and facades team.”
