Creating a level playing field at Surrey Sports Park

With Rugby World Cup 2015 in full swing, Thomasons is delighted to have had a hand in preparing a pitch used by the teams.

At Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, owned by the University of Surrey, Thomasons engineers re-designed the sloping ground of one of the pitches to create – literally – a level playing field meeting international standards.

Georgia Rugby Union used the pitch for pre-tournament training and the teams from Italy and Ireland are also practising on it during Rugby World Cup 2015. Surrey Sports Park has also been selected as an official Team Base for the knockout stages of the competition.

This is not the end of our work in the field! Thomasons has recently been appointed by Surrey University to provide consultancy and design services for a further sports field. Engineers will design the earthworks, surface water drainage and an access track for maintenance and events vehicles including facilities for TV. In a second project, Thomasons is designing the drainage for new accommodation at the university’s student village, Manor Park.
