Major healthcare award for Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup

Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup has recently been highly commended in the prestigious 2017 Building Better Healthcare Awards, in the sustainable development category. Celebrating its centenary this year, the hospital re-opened in September following completion of the first phase in a £30m redevelopment programme that is providing state-of-the-art facilities; Thomasons was responsible for the structural engineering elements of the project for Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, working in partnership with leading construction group Galliford Try.

In the most recent stage of the project, the ground and first floors of the main building were renovated to provide modern clinical accommodation and bring together outpatient services. Thomasons re-designed the main entrance to give visitors a better experience on arrival and enhance the natural light flowing into the building. A light well was infilled on the ground floor to create new clinical space and an external single storey extension was added. In addition, new plant was installed on the roof and new service risers were constructed to serve every floor of the building.

Thomasons has extensive experience in the healthcare sector and is registered under the Department of Health’s ProCure 21+ framework. Our many projects for major hospitals across the UK include the £150m redevelopment of Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield, which is the largest contract to date secured by Thomasons’ London office.
