Charters Court opens at award-winning retirement village
As structural engineers for the project, we were delighted to attend the recent official opening of Charters Court in East Grinstead, Sussex by Sam Gyimah, MP for East Surrey and Nigel Welby, Executive Chairman Retirement Villages. This new residential and nursing care home is part of the award-winning retirement village, Charters Village.
Thomasons provided structural engineering design services for the entire development, which consists of nine low-rise residential buildings for independent living, together with the care home.
The 16-acre site has an important history, having once been home to the world-famous dance and drama school, The Bush Davies School. Dating back more than a century, the Charters Towers building at the heart of the site has been converted into a club house with a range of communal facilities. This challenging conversion involved adding a reinforced concrete basement and a new two-storey load bearing masonry construction above, while retaining the architectural features of the original building.
