Engineering a Sustainable Future
As the construction industry continues its journey towards Net Zero 2050, Perega has joined other engineering practices across the UK in confirming its commitment to decarbonisation by signing up to ‘Engineers Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency’ campaign (Engineers Declare).
By joining forces with the wider engineering community, we aim to champion greener ways of working and more sustainable material choices within the built environment.
The campaign takes the form of a petition, which seeks to demonstrate our solidarity with the wider societal drive to halt and reverse climate change and protect our priceless natural environment.
Engineers Declare is part of the wider Construction Declares campaign, which brings together hundreds of firms, academic departments, and university students to state their aim to work in a more eco-friendly way.
According to our director, Steve McSorley, the decision to sign-up for the initiative was a simple one, as he explains, “climate change and the crucial need to reduce emissions is something which has become a matter of urgency. Given the built environment is a massive producer of CO2, those in the construction industry need to do everything they can to reduce levels produced. Structural and civil engineers can play an important and prominent role in the fight to protect and preserve our ecosystems.”
He continues, “There is a company-wide appetite to work more sustainably at every level, it’s a topic close to the heart of all staff. As an employee-owned trust, we take these decisions collectively at all levels and it’s great to see the Perega team motivated by such a positive issue. To this effect, we have established a net carbon group within the organisation looking holistically at how we can adopt greener practices, from what we recommend to clients day-in-day-out, to reducing energy and paper consumption in our offices. Fundamentally, we want to position the practice as a sustainable engineering partner of choice, these are the necessary steps towards achieving that.”
Perega is a passionate advocate of collective industry action and we’re keen that other practices sign-up and get involved. We want to work towards a landscape where all engineering outcomes have a more positive impact on the world around us.
