Building Awards nomination for Reed’s School project
Perega played an integral role in the design and build of Reed’s School’s new Bridgeman Building, which was recently shortlisted for a prestigious Building Award in the Small Project of the Year (Up to £5m) category.
Commencing in 2018, this ambitious renovation project in Cobham, Surrey, saw our team working once again with contractor Life Build Solutions Ltd and architectural practice IID Architects. Having provided civil and structural engineering consultancy for numerous projects on the school’s extensive site we were familiar with the client and their specific requirements.
Headed up by project-lead, Stuart Neal, in this instance the School wanted structural and civils support for the extensive internal remodelling to its Bridgeman Building, including a modern two-storey extension.
The enhanced structure would provide an additional eight classrooms and two laboratories and required: the removal of existing internal and external walls, a new staircase, a contemporary steel-framed extension and the redesign of below-ground drainage.
Completed to a tight deadline and a stringent budget, the project presented a number of practical challenges which put our engineers to the test.
However, Stuart and the team were able to develop a scalable, cost-effective solution to minimise any potential delays or disruption. According to Stuart, this involved:
Adopting a steel frame construction with precast concrete planks helped ensure the construction process on site was as streamlined as possible and enabled the architect’s visions to be realised.
Opened in 2021, this is latest phase in Reed’s School’s Barnett Suite development, which also saw existing classrooms expanded, a new server room built and the replacement of the existing roof and roof lanterns with a more sustainable option.
The Building Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony on Tuesday 1st November 2022 and we have our fingers’ crossed for a successful result on the evening.
