Tooting Police Station
Client: Telereal Trillium
Architect: Elcock
Value: £13 million
This iconic five-storey former police station and section house has not been operational since October 2020. Redevelopment plans look to enhance and extend the Grade II listed 1930s buildings to deliver residential accommodation and community space. The proposals will see key features of the building’s history and heritage maintained and enhanced, including the restoration of key elements of the external Art Deco façade, balconies and entrance and reinstatement of an iconic domed room, as well as retention of internal staircases and terrazzo flooring. The buildings will provide a mix of studio, one, two and three-bed apartments which will all benefit from sustainable features, including air source heat pumps and a green roof, as well as shared amenity space and a newly created landscaped courtyard. The ground floor delivers community space, which is currently being discussed with local community groups to identify potential occupiers.
Perega has provided civil and structural engineering design from the early stages of the project including advice on the partial demolition of some existing storage areas, which were later additions to the original building, structural design for the addition of an extra floor and internal structural remodelling, as well as extensive service and drainage modifications to accommodate the new use. The building required sensitive refurbishment, utilising a heritage focused approach celebrating the rich history of the former police station. Full planning permission has been granted alongside listed building approval.
