Royal Road, Kennington
Client: Higgins Construction
Architect: Panter Hudspith
Value: £12 million
Perega was commissioned by client Higgins Construction to provide civil and structural engineering services for the Royal Road residential development in Kennington, south London.
Royal Road, a development of four blocks, provides 96 affordable homes for Southwark residents. The four main cores of the building are linked along Royal Road and Cooks Road and comprise three and four-bedroom duplex homes with front and rear gardens, and apartments with roof terraces above. Arranged in a cross shape, the design allowed the team working on the project to save the majority of the existing mature trees on the site.
The structure is in-situ concrete on piles, with metal-framed high performance super insulated walls. Balconies are lined in timber, and reconstituted stone is used to form a ground floor plinth, which extends to form garden walls
All units were constructed to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 standard, and renewable energy features include a combined heating and power unit, solar panels and green roofs.
This highly praised development has won both a Completed Scheme Award at the Housing Design Awards, and a London Award and National Award from RIBA.
