Queens University, Belfast
Client: Omagh Aluminium Systems
Value: £13 million
Perega was involved with developing the new £13m computer science building at the prestigious Queen’s University in Belfast.
The scale and capacity of the original building had become inadequate to support a high quality student experience and the growth in student numbers. A new four-storey high building was therefore designed using part of the structural frame of the existing building and providing a new multi-storey link to adjacent buildings.
Perega’s glass and façade team was commissioned by Omagh Aluminium Systems to design the curtain walling elements of both the original and new buildings, creating a striking multi-coloured glazed façade. The bespoke glass fins which project into the walling were exceptionally challenging, owing to their varying lengths and the rigidity of the curtain walling.
This new landmark building, which provides around 5,025m² of space, incorporates student hub facilities, laboratories, lecture space and office accommodation. It has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating for its high level of energy efficiency.
