Lister Hospital – The Diamond Jubilee Maternity Unit
Client: East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust
Architect: AD Architects
Contractor: Medicinq Osborne
Value: £17 million
Perega was commissioned by East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust to act as civil and structural engineers in a major project to extend and modernise the maternity unit at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, as part of a wider development programme at the hospital.
Working under the NHS ProCure21 framework, our engineers developed the structural design of a new three-storey, flat-slab reinforced concrete-framed building adjacent to the original maternity unit. A single entrance hub links the new and original buildings.
Extensive investigation was required for the on-site drainage, which had to be relocated to make way for the new development site.
In addition, the original building was refurbished and converted to provide two new theatres, self-contained suites for the consultant and midwife-led units, together with a special care baby unit and neonatal intensive care unit.
Complete on time and on budget, the project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and, thanks to carbon reduction measures implemented in the design of the new building, has achieved significant energy savings.
The new building was named in honour of the Queen, who opened it in her Diamond Jubilee year.
