Kensington Neighbourhood Health Centre, Liverpool

Perega was part of the award-winning team that developed Kensington Neighbourhood Health Centre, a state-of-the-art health facility in one of the most deprived areas of Liverpool. It is one of 14 health centres constructed under a major government initiative to modernise primary healthcare in the city.

As structural and civil engineers, Perega designed the structure of the striking two-story steel-framed building, the roads and car parking on the site, and the drainage for the building and car park.

The two wings of the building are linked by a central reception area that leads into surgeries on the ground and first floor. To meet any future changes in use, Perega has created a flexible design with the internal walls independent of the structural frame allowing modifications to be carried out more efficiently.

A key visual feature of the building is a very large sign with the words “’Cause this land’s the place I love”, reflecting Gerry Marsden’s lyrics in Ferry ‘cross the Mersey. Our engineers achieved maximum impact by detailing the supporting steel frame to give the sign depth and a 3D effect.

Located on a major strategic gateway to the city centre, Kensington Neighbourhood Health Centre is the final phase of NHS Liverpool’s vision for ‘A New Health Service for Liverpool’ and part of the wider regeneration of the area.

The project has won the regeneration category of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) North West Awards and was named Regional Project of the Year at the North West Regional Construction Awards.
