Colfe’s School, Greenwich

Client: Colfe’s School

Contractor: R Durtnell & Sons Limited

Value: £7 million

Perega were commissioned to provide civil and structural engineering services for the new sixth form centre at Colfe’s, an independent school in Greenwich, south-east London.

The new building incorporates teaching facilities and a cafeteria, and links to both the school’s hall and existing teaching blocks. It consists of a two-tier structure, whereby the lower tier comprises two storeys and the higher has three storeys. The lower tier also features a green roof, which contributed to the building obtaining a BREEAM rating of Very Good.

The new building was required to link with an existing teaching block, which limited its height.

This left less space than would usually be found in a modern-day building, which the team had to incorporate into the design. We used flat-slab construction and a concrete frame structure to overcome this restriction.

The wing walls to the north and south elevations of the building also proved challenging, due to their size and the small surface area to which they had to be connected. Thomasons’ experts resolved this with a bespoke design that provided appropriate support.
