Senior Civil Engineer, Guildford

Role

We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic and driven senior civil engineer who is keen to develop their career. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of projects and tasks with minimal supervision to ensure the project is delivered within the agreed budget and programme and to a high quality. This includes communicating with the client, other consultants and colleagues to ensure a brief is agreed and adhered to in the delivery of the projects whilst maintaining a positive client relationship. As part of this, mentoring of junior members of the team will form part of the day-to-day activities.

Responsibilities of the role

The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Execute and coordinate projects, providing high quality technical design
  • Produce technical design information including drawings, calculations, specifications and reports
  • Review and approve reports, designs, drawings, sketches and calculations in accordance with quality procedures
  • Manage the preparation of feasibility studies and reports
  • Attend site visits to inspect construction being undertaken, compile validation reports and provide monthly update reports
  • Undertake the project management and financial control of small and medium sized projects
  • Liaise effectively with clients, local authorities and other design team members
  • Supervise and monitor the use of computer-based systems to ensure these are used correctly
  • Supervise and support junior members of the team
  • Assist in the preparation of bids and proposals
  • Adhere to existing working practices, methods and procedures
  • Deliver ‘best practice’
  • Proactive in self-development
  • Plan site investigation works
  • Deliver agreed business development targets
  • Assist the marketing department
  • Obtain and review quotes for investigation works
  • Manage the appointments and work of sub-contractors carrying out investigation works
  • Coordinate work undertaken by external sub-contractors
  • Attend and input at design meetings and site meetings, and record actions
  • Undertake site inspections, record findings and advise on any required actions

Role requirements

Essential

  • HND/HNC in civil engineering
  • Very good understanding in engineering principles
  • Knowledge of design software and its limitations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in delegating and supervising junior team members
  • Experience in acting as mentor to junior team members
  • Good organisational/time management skills
  • Proactive approach to work
  • Commitment to continual improvement at a personal and company level
  • Understand complex construction procedures

Preferable

  • University degree in civil engineering
  • Professionally qualified with ICE
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civils 3D and FLOW/Microdrainage/InfoDrainage

Key skills/competencies

Technical

  • Conversant in designing to British Standards/Eurocodes/Building Regulations/Sewerage Sector Guidance and the SuDS Manual (C753)
  • Competent in foul and surface water drainage design in accordance with adoptable standards and including SuDS
  • Competent in preparing drainage strategies and flood risk assessments
  • Experience in adoptable infrastructure design and the negotiation of S104, S106, S278, S38, S185 and S98 agreements
  • Experience in liaising with local authorities and other stakeholders to obtain necessary technical approvals and consents
  • Ability to use computer design software packages including Autocad, Civil 3D, FLOW & Smart Tools (or Microdrainage/InfoDrainage), Word, and Excel
  • Experienced in Cut/Fill analysis, building 3D models, and data shortcuts using Civil 3D
  • Sound knowledge of standard details
  • Sound understanding of CDM Regulations and the responsibilities of designers

Judgement and decision making

  • Able to identify and define engineering problems
  • Able to identify alternative engineering solutions and appraise these to identify the most appropriate to satisfy the client’s brief
  • Able to identify and control technical risks

Communication

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to produce accurate and clear sketches to communicate engineering solutions
  • Experienced in the production of specifications and technical reports and feasibility studies

Relationship building

  • Able to work effectively within and across teams and project groups
  • Able to develop and maintain collaborative relationships
  • Experience in managing client relationships
